What is it?
Scar Tissue Release is a treatment on scars and scar tissue, often following surgery or an accident. It is used to improve movement and sensation in the scar itself and the tissues surrounding it. The treatment is a light, systemic bodywork carried out on the scar and surrounding areas of the body. Scars themselves can appear flatter, paler, and less prominent after treatment, however the focus of Scar Tissue Release is on the layers of connective tissue under and around the scar, which can’t be seen. As the connective tissue relaxes and re-hydrates, other tissues become healthier, and this can improve numbness, pain, sensitivity, and free up restrictions near to the scar site and in connected (and often surprisingly distant) areas elsewhere in the body.
Multiple treatments are often required for maximum effect, but the response varies between individuals, and this will be guided by your individual goals.

How does it work?
Scar tissue is produced by the body to repair a wound. This happens after surgery, a cut, or an accident. It’s amazing that the body can heal itself in this way, however, scars and scar tissue can cause problems for us in and around the area of the initial wound, and often beyond this injury site. Scar tissue is often dry, tight, and adhered. Some of the problems this can cause are:
Appearance – sometimes scars heal in a way which looks obvious and can affect the way we feel about our overall appearance. People can feel anxious that other people will see/comment on/question/stare at their scar(s).
Emotion - People often feel disconnected to an area of the body where there is a large scar, or from a significant operation and/or event. Scar Tissue Release treatment can help the body let go of emotions associated with the event/surgery and can be very powerful in this way.
Pain / Restriction – scars can remain painful, tingly, sensitive or numb after they have healed. Restriction around the area or a nearby joint may occur when the initial wound heals. Pain and restriction in other areas can result after surgery and other wounds, as the connective tissue under and around the physical scar connects far and wide throughout the body.
Practical - Sometimes the scar that’s left is thick, making it difficult to wear clothing/jewellery.

Who can benefit?
Scar Tissue Release treatments are suitable for anyone. The treatment is light and so suitable for children and older people. Due to the light nature of this treatment, clients don’t even have to like traditional massage, as it is very different. Treatment can be effective on the oldest of scars, but the peak time for treatment is the first two years from the formation of the scar. Many different ‘types’ of scar can benefit from this treatment. The most important thing is that the scar is healed, dry, and free from infection. Unfortunately keloid scars cannot be treated.

For treatment, scars need to be dry and healed - healing times vary according to different surgeries. Each case is individual, so the following is not an exhaustive list, but an STR treatment cannot be given in the following circumstances:
